Making the decision to get in shape and sculpt your body into the one you feel the most comfortable in is a pretty big step. However, the biggest step is actually the first one you take walking into the gym. We all have our little hang-ups that keep us from having a healthy sense of confidence, and they’re often enough to keep us from taking that first step. Feeling good about who you are and where you’re going in life can have a big effect on your motivation towards self improvement.
Start with Small Goals
If you’re not comfortable starting out at the gym, there are smaller goals you can set and achieve that will help get you there. Start out by setting a goal to walk a mile a day, or even every other day. Then you can add a mile to your stroll every two weeks. You may find yourself ready to increase your distance after one week, and the obvious next goal is to change from a brisk walk to a jog, and then up to a full run.
Every step you take puts you ahead of the person that’s still at home sitting on the couch. And once you realize that every step you’ve taken towards your goal has been accomplished, your confidence will go through the roof.
See and Feel Your Progress
One of the best ways to boost your confidence in your fitness journey is to keep track of your progress. Start a journal with pictures of your before body and take notes of your feelings before and after exercising. For instance, have you noticed that your legs don’t turn to jelly as quickly during your run? Have your clothes started fitting better? Were you able to move up a notch on your belt? This is progress, forward progress towards your goal of better health and a better body. It can be difficult to see the progress yourself since it’s done so gradually, so having a journal to look back on where you started can help as a motivator if you hit a plateau in your fitness journey to keep you from giving up.
Work with a Trainer
Now that you’ve finally worked up the confidence to take that first step into the gym, don’t be afraid to ask for help. It can be daunting to workout in a gym in front of strangers, so there’s no shame in working with a trainer. Khurana Kickboxing offers private training in the gym and at your house. Personal training has dual benefits, as we can develop and implement a custom workout plan specifically for your body, goals, and fitness level while also ensuring you’re never alone in the gym. Eventually you’ll get the hang of this whole gym situation and you will feel confident enough to go it alone.
Take a Friend
The best of friends will push and motivate and walk with you every step of the way, all the while telling you how proud they are. Your friends often have the ability to give us confidence when we need it the most, so it’s only natural to share this experience with them. Have them take a run with you, hit the gym with you, spar with you in a kickboxing class and they’ll reap the benefits of a healthy confidence right along with you.
